Masonry and render painting

The older cottages in the village core are solid walled and were built to let moisture out through the face. A modern impermeable masonry paint on one of those closes that route and tends to show up as damp somewhere less convenient. Those walls want a breathable mineral coating if they want anything at all, and sometimes the right answer is to leave the stone alone.

Exterior painting

The postwar detached housing around the core is the opposite: cavity walled, modern render or brick, and perfectly happy with an ordinary masonry coating. Two houses a hundred yards apart can need different products, which is why the first visit matters here more than most.

Interior painting

Cottages with uneven walls and low ceilings, and modern houses with flat plasterboard. The first shows every brush mark and wants a matt finish; the second will take anything.

Woodwork and staircases

Older cottage joinery, often with a lot of history in it, next door to modern doors that take a coat and are done.

Questions from Irby

Can I use ordinary masonry paint on an old stone cottage?

You can, and on a solid wall built to breathe it is usually the wrong answer. An impermeable coating stops moisture leaving through the face, and it then finds another way out. A breathable mineral coating is the right family of product, and sometimes leaving the stone alone is better than either.

Two houses on my street look similar but need different paint?

They can, yes. A solid walled cottage and a postwar cavity house want opposite things, and using the wrong one is not a finish problem, it is a damp problem a couple of years later. It is the first thing to establish.

Twelve towns across the peninsula. What decides a decorating job here is what the last coat was, how old it is and which way the wall faces, and that is genuinely different in Meols from how it is in Bebington.
