Painter and decorator in Wallasey

One town, three different exposures
Wallasey runs from sheltered streets inland out to the promenade and New Brighton, where a wall faces the mouth of the Mersey with nothing in the way. The same paint on the same render will behave completely differently at the two ends of it.
Inland, a good masonry coating lasts the length of time the tin says. On the front, salt gets under the paint film and lifts it, wind driven rain finds any opening, and a north facing elevation grows algae because it never properly dries. None of that is a product fault. It is why the specification for a seafront elevation is not the specification for the back of the same house.
Reading a painted wall before anybody quotes it
Paint coming off in sheets rather than flakes means moisture behind it, and painting over that is money thrown away. Chalky powder on your hand when you rub it means the coating has weathered out and the wall needs stabilising before anything goes on. Green or black growth means a north elevation that stays damp, which needs treating and not just covering.
Those three tell you most of what a quote should say. A number given from the pavement without any of them being mentioned is a number for painting, not for the job.
Bay fronts, sashes and the detail that eats the day
A lot of Wallasey's older housing is bay fronted with timber sashes, and the bay is where exterior paint fails first: it has the most exposed timber, the most joints and the most standing water on the sills.
Sash windows are priced per window rather than by elevation, because a sound one is an hour and a rotten cill is a different trade before it is a painting job. Worth having that settled in writing at the quote rather than discovered on the scaffold.
What people here actually ring about
Full exterior repaints on render, because the last one is twelve years old and the front of the house looks it. Hallways, stairs and landings, because they are the hardest room to do yourself. And whole house interiors after a purchase, where every room comes back to white before anybody chooses a colour.

Questions from Wallasey
How often does a seafront house need repainting?
Far more often than the same house three miles inland, and that is the honest answer rather than a number. Salt and wind driven rain work on the paint film constantly. What changes the interval most is the preparation and the product, not the colour.
My paint is coming off in sheets. Can you just paint over it?
No. Sheets rather than flakes means there is moisture behind the film, and a new coat on top traps it and fails the same way. The loose material comes off, the cause gets looked at, and the wall is stabilised first.
Do you paint sash windows?
Yes, and they are priced per window rather than by the elevation, because they vary so much. A sound sash is straightforward. A rotten cill or a failed joint is joinery first, and we will tell you which you have.

Twelve towns across the peninsula. What decides a decorating job here is what the last coat was, how old it is and which way the wall faces, and that is genuinely different in Meols from how it is in Bebington.
