Interior painting
What you are actually paying for
An interior decorating price is mostly preparation. Filling, sanding, caulking, spot priming and masking are the parts that decide how the finished wall looks, and they are invisible the moment the first coat goes on, which is exactly why they are the first thing cut from a cheap quote.
The giveaway is light. A wall that looks fine under a ceiling light will show every unfilled chip, every proud fill and every ridge of old paint the moment low sun comes across it, and the room you notice it in is usually the one with the big window. So the standard of finish is worth agreeing out loud: a hallway going under a mid sheen is not the same preparation as a south facing living room in a flat matt.
Hallways, stairs and landings are the job people most often start and most often stop. They are high, awkward, hard to access safely and impossible to do a bit at a time, and they are the single most common thing we are called back to finish. Often asked about alongside exterior painting, masonry and render painting and wallpapering.
Get a price for the roomsThe real variable. Two rooms the same size can be a day apart on preparation alone, and that is what makes two quotes differ.
Raking daylight finds everything. A room with a big window is a higher standard of preparation than a windowless hallway, and costs accordingly.
Stairwells and landings need towers or staging rather than a stepladder, and that is time rather than materials.
Done across Birkenhead, Wallasey, Bebington, and everywhere else on the peninsula.

What this job looks like
The slots below are placeholders. The pictures elsewhere on this site are example images of the kind of work described, each one labelled as such, and they are not photographs of our own jobs. Nothing here is borrowed from anybody else's. Our own photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them.

Frequently asked questions
Interior painting: the questions people ask
The ones that come up most. If yours is not here, ring and ask.
Why is my hallway dearer than my living room?
Access and edges. A stairwell needs staging rather than a stepladder, there is far more cutting in per square metre around doors, architraves and the balustrade, and none of it can be done quickly from the floor. Area is a poor guide to the price of a hall.
How many coats will it need?
Two over a similar colour on a sound wall. Three where you are going lighter over a strong colour, or where the wall is newly plastered and takes a mist coat first. It is stated in the quote rather than decided on the day, because it is a real difference in cost.
Can you paint over a dark colour?
Yes, with the right primer or an extra coat. Going from a dark or strong colour to a pale one without either is how you get a finish that looks patchy in daylight for years. It is worth paying for the extra coat.
Do you paint ceilings as well?
Yes, and they are quoted with the room rather than separately. A ceiling in the same colour as the last one is quick. A ceiling that has a stain, a repair or a colour change is not, and a stain needs blocking rather than covering or it comes back through.
Done across Birkenhead, Wallasey, Bebington, and everywhere else on the peninsula.
Tell us which rooms
A list of rooms and a photo of the worst wall is usually enough for a first number.
About Wirral Painting
How the work is actually organised
Wirral Painting takes the job as main contractor and puts the labour on it. One person quotes it, one person is answerable for it, and you are not chasing three numbers to find out who is turning up on Tuesday.
It is worth saying plainly rather than implying a van and a family name. What you get is a written scope with the preparation itemised, a date, and somebody whose problem it is if the date moves.
What we will tell you we are not
Damp treatment, plastering and joinery are other trades. All three turn up constantly in decorating enquiries, because a decorator is usually the first person to see the problem.
A damp patch that keeps returning, a wall that needs replastering rather than filling, a rotten cill under a window you want painted: we will tell you that is what you are looking at rather than put a coat over it and take the money.
No photographs of our work, and why the site says so
There are no job photographs on this site. The slots are placeholders and they are labelled as placeholders. Nothing here is a stock picture presented as a job and nothing is borrowed from another company.
Real photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them, and not before. The same goes for anything that looks like a customer quote. There is a section built and ready for them, switched off, and it stays that way until there are real ones with permission attached.

Tell us which rooms, or which elevations, and roughly what state they are in. A photograph on the form answers most of the preparation questions before anybody rings you back.
