What moves a decorating price
Not a price list, because a price for your house needs somebody to look at it. What this is, is what a quote should tell you and what actually changes the number.
- Preparation priced separately
- Floors and furniture covered
- We say when paint is not the fix

Why two quotes for the same room differ so much
The most useful thing to understand about decorating prices is that the paint is almost irrelevant to them. Materials are a small part of a decorating job; the overwhelming majority of the cost is time, and the overwhelming majority of the time is preparation. Two quotes for the same room that differ by half are usually two different amounts of preparation, not two different profit margins.
So the question to ask every decorator who quotes is the same one: what preparation is included in this number. Filling and sanding to what standard. Caulking, or not. How many coats. Is the woodwork being sanded flat or just keyed. Is the wall being stabilised or painted as it is. A quote that answers those is comparable with another quote that answers them. A quote that is one number for a room is not comparable with anything.
We will not publish a price per room, because it would be a number with no information in it and you would be comparing it against somebody else's number with no information in it. What we will do is itemise, so you can see the preparation and the coats separately and decide to buy less of either with your eyes open. Often asked about alongside interior painting, exterior painting and masonry and render painting.
Get your own number in writingMaterials are a small part of a decorating job. Nearly all of it is time, and nearly all of the time is getting the surface right.
Stairwells, high ceilings, scaffolding and hillside plots. Access changes an exterior price more than area does.
A small hallway with eighty years of paint on the woodwork costs more than a large plain bedroom.
Done across Birkenhead, Wallasey, Bebington, and everywhere else on the peninsula.

What this job looks like
The slots below are placeholders. The pictures elsewhere on this site are example images of the kind of work described, each one labelled as such, and they are not photographs of our own jobs. Nothing here is borrowed from anybody else's. Our own photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them.
Why people use us
What our quote shows you
Preparation and finish coats as separate lines, so the comparison with anybody else's number is an honest one.
- Preparation itemised rather than implied
- Number of coats stated
- Access and protection shown separately on exterior work
- Everything an estimate until the surface has been seen
Frequently asked questions
Painting prices: the questions people ask
The ones that come up most. If yours is not here, ring and ask.
Why will you not give me a price per room over the phone?
Because it would be a guess dressed up as a number. The same room can be two or three times the work depending on what is on the walls and the woodwork, and a phone price either protects us by being high or traps you by being low and growing.
Is it cheaper if I do the preparation myself?
It can be, genuinely, and we will price it that way if you want. The thing to be clear about is that the finish is then limited by the preparation, and we cannot be answerable for a result that is decided by work we did not do.
Is it cheaper if I buy the paint?
Marginally, and it is usually a false economy. Trade products behave differently from retail ones, coverage varies a lot, and if a colour is short halfway through a wall the delay costs more than the saving.
Do you charge for a quote?
No. Somebody comes and looks at the actual surfaces, which is the only way to give you a number that means anything, and you get it in writing with the preparation itemised.
Done across Birkenhead, Wallasey, Bebington, and everywhere else on the peninsula.

About Wirral Painting
How the work is actually organised
Wirral Painting takes the job as main contractor and puts the labour on it. One person quotes it, one person is answerable for it, and you are not chasing three numbers to find out who is turning up on Tuesday.
It is worth saying plainly rather than implying a van and a family name. What you get is a written scope with the preparation itemised, a date, and somebody whose problem it is if the date moves.
What we will tell you we are not
Damp treatment, plastering and joinery are other trades. All three turn up constantly in decorating enquiries, because a decorator is usually the first person to see the problem.
A damp patch that keeps returning, a wall that needs replastering rather than filling, a rotten cill under a window you want painted: we will tell you that is what you are looking at rather than put a coat over it and take the money.
No photographs of our work, and why the site says so
There are no job photographs on this site. The slots are placeholders and they are labelled as placeholders. Nothing here is a stock picture presented as a job and nothing is borrowed from another company.
Real photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them, and not before. The same goes for anything that looks like a customer quote. There is a section built and ready for them, switched off, and it stays that way until there are real ones with permission attached.
