Masonry and render painting

Moreton has a great deal of pebbledash and rendered elevation, and being flat and open means the whole town gets the weather rather than just the seaward streets. Painting dash is a different job from painting smooth render: it takes far more material, it has to be worked into the texture rather than rolled over it, and a quote priced per square metre as if it were flat will be wrong.

Exterior painting

Interwar semis and postwar bungalows, with the usual coastal pattern of the seaward elevation needing attention years before the sheltered one.

uPVC spraying

A lot of bungalows with uPVC frames, conservatories and garage doors that are sound but tired. Recolouring is the sensible answer where the frames themselves are fine.

Interior painting

Bungalow interiors, where the ceilings are directly under the roof and any history of condensation shows up on them first.

Questions from Moreton

Does painting pebbledash cost more than painting smooth render?

Yes, noticeably. The texture has a far larger surface area than it looks and the coating has to be worked into it rather than rolled across it, so it takes more material and more time. A per square metre price that does not distinguish the two is not a price for your wall.

Can painting pebbledash stop it looking dated?

It changes the colour, and a modern colour does a lot. It does not change the texture. If the texture is the thing you dislike, that is a rendering question rather than a painting one and we would say so.

Other areas covered

Twelve towns across the peninsula. What decides a decorating job here is what the last coat was, how old it is and which way the wall faces, and that is genuinely different in Meols from how it is in Bebington.

A photo of the worst wall is more useful than a description of all of them, and it is usually enough for a first answer.
