Wallpapering on the Wirral

The wall decides whether the paper looks right
Paper is less forgiving than paint, not more. A heavy textured paper hides a little; most modern papers, and every smooth or metallic one, show the wall underneath in any raking light. So the preparation for papering is at least as thorough as for painting, and on a poor wall it means lining first, cross lined so the joints cannot coincide.
Then the hanging itself, where the things that go wrong are specific and visible forever. Seams that open as the paper dries because it was not allowed to soak evenly. A pattern that drifts because the first length was not plumbed. Visible overlaps at internal corners. Bubbles from paste that was not worked out. None of those can be fixed afterwards without taking the wall off again.
Quantity matters too, and it is the one thing worth getting right before ordering. A large pattern repeat can waste a third of a roll per drop, and running out of a batch halfway up a chimney breast is not recoverable: a second batch will not match. We will work out the rolls from the repeat and the drop rather than from the area on the back of the roll. Often asked about alongside woodwork and staircases, spray painting and kitchen respray.
Get a price for the hangingMost walls that have been papered before do. Cross lining stops the joints coinciding and is what makes a smooth paper look right.
A big repeat wastes a lot per drop. The roll count comes from the repeat and the drop, not from the area.
Running out mid wall is not recoverable, because a second batch will not match. Order generously once.
Done across Birkenhead, Bebington, and everywhere else on the peninsula.

What this job looks like
The slots below are placeholders. The pictures elsewhere on this site are example images of the kind of work described, each one labelled as such, and they are not photographs of our own jobs. Nothing here is borrowed from anybody else's. Our own photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them.

Frequently asked questions
Wallpapering: the questions people ask
The ones that come up most. If yours is not here, ring and ask.
Can you paper over existing wallpaper?
We would not. Even where the old paper is stuck fast, the paste in the new one can soften it and lift both, and any seam or texture underneath telegraphs through. Stripping is a day you would rather not pay for and it is the day that decides the result.
How many rolls do I need?
It depends on the pattern repeat far more than on the wall area. A large repeat can waste close to a third of a roll on every drop. Send us the paper details and the wall sizes and we will work it out before you order, because ordering short is the one mistake that cannot be fixed.
Will the seams show?
Not on a wall that has been lined and with paper that has been allowed to soak evenly before hanging. Seams opening a week later is almost always uneven soaking or a wall that was not flat, rather than the paper.
Can you just do a feature wall?
Yes, and it is a common job. The thing worth knowing is that one wall still carries the full setting up, stripping and lining, so it is not a quarter of the price of four walls.
Done across Birkenhead, Bebington, and everywhere else on the peninsula.
Send the paper details and the wall sizes
The pattern repeat and the drop height tell us the roll count, which is the number worth having before you order.
About Wirral Painting
How the work is actually organised
Wirral Painting takes the job as main contractor and puts the labour on it. One person quotes it, one person is answerable for it, and you are not chasing three numbers to find out who is turning up on Tuesday.
It is worth saying plainly rather than implying a van and a family name. What you get is a written scope with the preparation itemised, a date, and somebody whose problem it is if the date moves.
What we will tell you we are not
Damp treatment, plastering and joinery are other trades. All three turn up constantly in decorating enquiries, because a decorator is usually the first person to see the problem.
A damp patch that keeps returning, a wall that needs replastering rather than filling, a rotten cill under a window you want painted: we will tell you that is what you are looking at rather than put a coat over it and take the money.
No photographs of our work, and why the site says so
There are no job photographs on this site. The slots are placeholders and they are labelled as placeholders. Nothing here is a stock picture presented as a job and nothing is borrowed from another company.
Real photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them, and not before. The same goes for anything that looks like a customer quote. There is a section built and ready for them, switched off, and it stays that way until there are real ones with permission attached.

Tell us which rooms, or which elevations, and roughly what state they are in. A photograph on the form answers most of the preparation questions before anybody rings you back.
